Apple plans solar farm data center in Reno

Apple plans to build a solar farm to power a new data center in Reno, Nevada, in accordance with the goal of having their data centers with renewable energy company. The company has signed an agreement with the Nevada utility NV Energy to build a solar power plant on 167 acres in northern Nevada, to be able to produce between 18 and 20 megawatts of power, Apple announced Monday. The new solar park will provide the energy needed to operate a data center 1 billion for cloud services from Apple that is east of Sparks.
Once completed, the installation of new solar panel will generate about 43.5 million kilowatt hours of clean energy per year to the grid of Sierra Pacific Power, which supplies the data center, Apple said in a statement . Because data centers consume large amounts of electricity, Apple has agreed to manage their data centers entirely on renewable energy. An Apple computer center in Maiden, North Carolina, which runs entirely off renewable energy is supplied by solar panels held by the largest end user of the nation.

"While Apple's data center uses 100 percent renewable energy, and we are on track to achieve this in our new data center in Reno using the latest performance concentrating solar panels," Apple said in a press release announcing the project. "This project will not only provide renewable energy for our data center, but also provide clean energy to the local power grid, through a first of its kind partnership with NV Energy. "
The company has shown a keen interest in renewable energy, both in its facilities and equipment. Besides its Maiden data center, Apple locations in Austin, Texas, Elk Grove, California, and Cork, Ireland, powered percent renewable energy resources 100.

Although Apple has not yet published the solar gadgets, the company was granted a patent in 2011 for a system that uses a solar panel to charge various mobile devices, including a laptop, tablet, phone or other handheld gadget.
